BCCI to Update ICC on Tax Exemption Issue for 2023 ODI World Cup in India.
With tax exemptions, the BCCI will tell the ICC shortly of the Indian government’s position. The tax exemption was included in the host’s agreement that the BCCI and the ICC signed in 2014 when India was awarded the privilege to host three men’s events: the ODI World Cup in 2023, the T20 World Cup in 2021, and the T20 World Cup in 2016. The 2018 Champions Trophy was eventually renamed the 2021 T20 World Cup owing to the pandemic. As per the agreement, it was the responsibility of the BCCI to provide aid to the ICC (along with all the commercial partners involved in the event) in acquiring tax exemptions.
The Indian tax authorities warned the ICC last year that it would be assessed a 20% tax order (excluding surcharges) on its broadcast earnings from the 2023 World Cup. In a memo circulated to its members – state associations – the BCCI mentioned that any tax paid by the ICC would be “offset” against the Indian board’s earnings from the ICC’s central revenue pool.
In the memo, the BCCI evaluated the ICC’s broadcasting revenue for the 2023 World Cup to be USD 533.29 million. It said that the “financial effect” of a 10.92% tax order on that would be about UDS 58.23 million (the BCCI’s note showed the value as USD 52.23 million, which appears to be a mistake given the percentages cited). The figure would more than quadruple to over USD 116.47 million if the tax component was set at 21.84%, as the Indian tax authorities want.
